After a year and a half of negotiations and regulatory reviews, a merger between two South Jersey health care systems has finally been completed. Cape Regional Health System, a prominent health care organization serving Cape May and Atlantic counties, has officially joined forces with Camden-based Cooper University Health Care as of Monday. The flagship hospital of the coastal health system, Cape Regional Medical Center in Cape May Court House, has been rebranded as Cooper University Hospital Cape Regional.
Former chairman of the Cape Regional Board of Trustees, Garry Gilbert, referred to this milestone as the beginning of a “new chapter for health care” in the region. He expressed confidence that the combined systems will be able to expand their reach and effectively serve more people. Christine Winn, senior vice president and chief regional officer at Cooper, will now be in charge of overseeing the health system’s operations in Cape May and Atlantic counties.
In a press release, Winn mentioned that the entire Cooper team is excited to work with their new colleagues in Cape May County to improve access to high-quality care and enhance the overall health care experience for residents of the region. Apart from Cape Regional’s hospital and cancer and surgery center, Cooper has also acquired the system’s three urgent care centers, various outpatient primary and specialty care offices, and other health services in the area.
