Optus Embraces Ericsson’s Interference Sensing Technology for Enhanced 5G Network Performance

Optus has recently implemented Ericsson’s Interference Sensing technology on its live network to advance its 5G capabilities. This is the first time this technology has been used in the world to improve network performance and provide better data experiences for users. Interference Sensing is a feature in Ericsson’s Massive MIMO 5G Advanced portfolio that detects and reduces inter-cell interference in real-time, increasing user throughput and network capacity.

Through the use of algorithms and beam-forming technology, Interference Sensing maximizes signal energy for serving cell users while minimizing interference with neighboring cell users. This leads to a significant enhancement in overall network performance. During pilot tests, Optus observed a 22 percent average increase in user throughput, demonstrating the potential of this technology to address interference issues as 5G networks become denser.

Optus believes that the implementation of Interference Sensing technology will improve data experiences for customers by providing faster data throughput and enabling new use cases for services like video streaming, mobile cloud gaming, stadium applications, and AR/VR. This suggests that the benefits of this technology may extend beyond just enhancing user experiences.

Overall, Optus’s pilot of Interference Sensing technology showcases a bright future for 5G networks. The improvements in network performance and user experience seen in the pilot suggest that this technology may soon be implemented on a larger scale. As other telecommunication companies monitor these advancements, we may see similar deployments across global networks in the near future.
