This garden is one of 15 created by Penn State Health to improve access to healthy food in central Pennsylvania. Community Health Improvement Week is observed from June 10 to 14, providing an opportunity to acknowledge the efforts of individuals and organizations working together to enhance the health and well-being of communities and promote health equity.

In fiscal year 2023, Penn State Health hospitals contributed over $7.3 million toward community health improvement. More than 43,000 community benefit hours were provided by community partners and students, benefiting over 970,000 individuals. The Community Benefit Inventory for Social Accountability (CBISA) listed 223 community benefit programs and hosted over 2,102 community events. Penn State Health hospitals and the College of Medicine utilize CBISA to track and report their community benefit activities.

Our 222 Community Benefit Reporters at all Penn State Health hospitals and the College of Medicine are dedicated to tracking and reporting community service activities. Currently, the hospitals are conducting their fifth Community Health Needs Assessment to identify the most critical health needs in the region, with results expected to be announced in November 2024.

Jim George, the Penn State Health community relations director, emphasized the collective effort to advance health equity and improve the well-being of individuals and communities. The 2023 Community Benefit Report showcases the various ways in which Penn State Health is serving communities.
