West Nile fever continues to affect people, with at least 100 confirmed cases and 8 patients in serious condition in intensive care units across the central region of the country. Some patients are also from the Sharon area and have been hospitalized at Meir Hospital in Kfar Saba. Unfortunately, 5 patients have already died at Billinson Hospital, with others still admitted and undergoing treatment.
At Sheba Hospital, 6 patients are hospitalized, with 3 in serious condition. Meanwhile, Meir Hospital in Kfar Saba has 25 patients with West Nile fever, including 2 in serious condition requiring ventilation. Additional patients have been admitted to Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv. There are also 8 suspected cases awaiting confirmation in the central laboratory for viruses.
West Nile fever is caused by a virus that is transmitted through infected mosquitoes that initially bite birds. The virus can then be passed on to animals and humans through mosquito bites. While the infection is usually mild and can go away on its own, it can also lead to severe illness or even death. Symptoms include fever, headache, weakness, joint and muscle pain, and more.
Those at high risk for West Nile fever are individuals with compromised immune systems, such as cancer patients, infants, and the elderly. There is currently no vaccine for humans, with protection available only for horses. Treatment includes managing symptoms, preventing secondary infections, and providing supportive care. Prevention measures include using mosquito repellents, window nets, and reporting mosquito clusters.
If you experience prolonged fever, vomiting, difficulty urinating, rapid breathing, decreased consciousness, sensitivity to light, or severe headaches after a mosquito bite, it is important to seek medical attention promptly. These symptoms could indicate a more serious complication of West Nile fever that requires urgent treatment.
