Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst recently explained that several factors contributed to the decision to move on from running back Aaron Jones this offseason. Gutekunst cited difficulties involved in restructuring Jones’ contract and the unexpected opportunity to pursue Josh Jacobs as reasons for the move.

In an interview with CheeseheadTV, Gutekunst said that while it was difficult to part ways with Jones, the landscape changed and the team needed to do what was best for the organization. Negotiations for a pay cut with Jones fell through, leading to the decision to move on.

Initially, Gutekunst had expected Jones to return but unforeseen financial hurdles and the chance to sign Jacobs led to a shift in plans. Jacobs, the 2022 rushing champion, presented the opportunity to upgrade at running back long-term, while also re-signing backup A.J. Dillon on a cost-effective deal to strengthen the position.

Overall, Gutekunst emphasized that despite the emotional attachment to Jones, the decision to part ways was in the best interest of the Green Bay Packers organization. The unexpected turn of events with Jones and the opportunity to pursue Jacobs ultimately influenced the team’s decision this offseason.
