The Florida Panthers have won their first Stanley Cup championship in franchise history. Sam Reinhart and Carter Verhaeghe scored goals, while Sergei Bobrovsky made 23 saves in a 2-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final. This victory marked the Panthers’ third appearance in the final, after being swept in 1996 by Colorado and losing 4-1 to Vegas last season.
Despite initially winning the first three games of the series, the Panthers faced a tough challenge as they lost the next three games. They needed a win in Game 7 to avoid becoming one of the few teams in NHL history to lose the final after taking a 3-0 lead. Fortunately, they were able to secure the victory and claim the championship.
In other sports news, New York Mets closer Edwin Díaz was suspended for 10 games by Major League Baseball after being ejected from a game against the Chicago Cubs for having a foreign substance on his hand. This suspension is part of MLB’s crackdown on pitchers using foreign substances to improve their grip and spin rates. Díaz will begin serving his suspension in the upcoming Subway Series opener against the New York Yankees at Citi Field, unless he decides to appeal the decision.
