Pashinyan reiterates the need for a new Constitution in our country.

During his address on Constitution Day, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan highlighted the need for a new Constitution in Armenia. He emphasized that the people of the country are sovereign, both de jure and de facto, following the People’s Nonviolent Velvet Revolution in 2018. Pashinyan pointed out that the current Constitution is in deep socio-psychological conflict because citizens do not feel that it reflects their understanding and agreement about the rules of living in the country.

The Prime Minister stressed the importance of creating a new Constitution that is organically linked with the people, showing that what is written in it is the shared idea of the state created by the citizens. He highlighted the necessity of continuing to strengthen the Republic of Armenia institutionally, psychologically, and physically, despite the challenges along the way.

In congratulatory messages on Constitution Day, President Vahagn Khachatryan and President of the National Assembly Alen Simonyan underlined the importance of democracy in Armenia and the commitment to advancing legislation that benefits the people. They both emphasized the role of the Constitution as a flexible instrument that guides the path towards a prosperous and dignified society.

The US Embassy in Armenia also sent best wishes on Constitution Day, recognizing the significance of the occasion in celebrating the country’s commitment to democratic values. The holiday, observed on July 5 each year, marks the adoption of the Constitution in 1995, with subsequent amendments in 2005 and 2015.

Prime Minister Pashinyan’s call for a new Constitution earlier in the year sparked debates in Armenia, with some expressing concerns about external influence on the decision. Despite these challenges, the government affirmed its commitment to creating a Constitution that aligns with the country’s interests and aspirations. The focus remains on building a strong and competitive Republic of Armenia in the face of changing regional dynamics.
