Patient with cardiac arrest saved by hypothermia for one hour

A 33-year-old man was drinking water when he suddenly lost consciousness and had cardiac arrest. After nearly 50 minutes of continuous CPR, doctors at Bai Chay Hospital were able to revive him and transfer him to Quang Ninh General Hospital. The patient was then placed in the Intensive Care Unit where doctors used the technique of command hypothermia to control his body temperature and administered various treatments to address circulatory issues.

Dr. Nguyen Thi Dung from the Department of Intensive Care – Artificial Kidney explained that despite the successful emergency treatment, the patient was still in critical condition with a high risk of sequelae and a low survival rate due to potential brain damage. However, after four days of treatment, the patient regained consciousness and showed almost no neurological sequelae.

Currently, medical professionals are attempting to determine the cause of the patient’s cardiac arrest in order to prevent a recurrence. Studies have shown that hypothermia can significantly reduce mortality rates and the occurrence of severe sequelae in patients with brain damage following cardiac or respiratory arrest. It is crucial that hypothermia treatment is administered within 6 hours for maximum effectiveness.

Respiratory circulatory arrest is a serious condition that requires prompt treatment to prevent death or permanent brain damage. CPR is essential in maintaining the victim’s breathing and heart function, and can help prevent organ damage due to lack of oxygen circulation. Early detection and appropriate treatment are vital in ensuring the best outcome for individuals experiencing cardiac or respiratory arrest.
