Patrick Cantlay’s participation in the upcoming Royal Troon event has been called into question due to his recent withdrawal from the John Deere Classic. Cantlay cited an injury sustained during training as the reason for pulling out of the tournament, though the specifics of his injury were not disclosed. This untimely setback comes just as Cantlay was set to make his debut at the John Deere Classic, with Russell Knox stepping in to replace him in the field.
Despite this setback, Cantlay has had a successful career on the PGA Tour, boasting eight victories. His last win was at the 2022 BMW Championship, and he has achieved four top-10 finishes this season. With strong performances at the U.S. Open and the Travelers Championship, Cantlay has been a consistent performer this season, missing the cut only once in 15 starts. Prior to his withdrawal, he was ranked 8th in the Official World Golf Rankings.
Although Cantlay’s injury appears to be minor, it will likely keep him out of competition until the British Open at Royal Troon begins on July 18th. With Cantlay not listed in the field for the Genesis Scottish Open next week and having skipped the Rocket Mortgage Classic, he will have three weeks off to recover. While this break may impact his preparation for a major championship, Cantlay now has ample time to nurse his injury and get back to peak performance.
In the meantime, golf fans can still look forward to seeing top players like Jordan Spieth in action at the John Deere Classic this week. Spieth, a former winner of the tournament, will be competing for a chance to earn a spot in the British Open. The top two players on the leaderboard by the end of the tournament who are not already exempt will secure positions in the prestigious event.
