Peru’s economic and social development relies on investment in telecommunications

The advancement of telecommunications in Peru has accelerated since the early 1990s, leading to constant evolution. Landline telephones, cable television, the Internet, and high-speed Internet have revolutionized lives and contributed to the economic and social development of the entire country. The future holds even more possibilities with new technologies like artificial intelligence emerging. A recent webinar titled “The impact of telecommunications in Peru” discussed these advancements, emphasizing the importance of investing in infrastructure to reduce social inequalities and increase economic productivity.

Over the past 30 years, the share of the telecommunications sector in Peru’s GDP has tripled, showcasing the sector’s significant growth. Private investment projects in the telecommunications sector have totaled billions of dollars, with investments continuing to grow despite a decline in overall private investment. Telecommunications companies like Telefónica del Perú have been instrumental in connecting communities across the country, aiming to reduce the digital divide.

The panel of experts highlighted the role of digital transformation in Peru’s development, especially during the pandemic. Advances in telecommunications have enabled better services, connectivity, and opportunities, particularly in sectors like education and healthcare. The panel stressed the importance of enhancing digital skills and ensuring equity in the evolving technological landscape.

Collaboration between the private telecommunications sector and the Peruvian government has been crucial in driving growth and productivity in the country. The Minister of Transport and Communications emphasized the significance of telecommunications infrastructure in economic development, noting its role in various sectors like mining and production processes.

Overall, the telecommunications sector in Peru has seen significant progress in the past few decades, leading to improved connectivity, economic growth, and social development. The future holds even more potential for advancements in telecommunications and digital transformation, highlighting the importance of continued investment and collaboration between stakeholders.
