Poll shows many New Yorkers are pessimistic about the economy and contemplating moving

The latest Marist poll reveals that over half of New Yorkers believe their economy is worsening, leading many to contemplate leaving the state. Specifically, 51 percent of respondents expressed that the current economic situation is deteriorating, while 31 percent believe it has remained the same, and 18 percent feel it is improving.

The survey results reflect a divide along party lines, with 71 percent of Republicans indicating a decline in the economy compared to 37 percent of Democrats. Additionally, an overwhelming majority of 81 percent of participants stated that the cost of living in New York is unaffordable.

Despite concerns about the economy, 61 percent of those surveyed plan to stay in the state over the next five years. However, 37 percent are considering leaving New York during the same period, with many citing economic factors as the primary motivation. Among those planning to depart, 58 percent attributed economic reasons as their main cause, while 25 percent mentioned quality of life, 13 percent taxes, 9 percent politics, and 4 percent jobs.

Commenting on the survey findings, Lee M. Miringoff, the director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion, emphasized the dissatisfaction with the current economic situation in New York and the persistent desire to relocate elsewhere. The poll, conducted from April 8-10 among 1,408 New York adults, has a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points.
