A new sports complex in Southeast Tallahassee, named the Charlie Ward Champions Ranch after the former FSU quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner, is one step closer to becoming a reality. The proposed complex would be located near the intersection of Capital Circle Southeast and Woodville Highway. The Tallahassee-Leon County Planning Commission recently voted to recommend rezoning the area to make way for the project.

One resident, Miesha Barrington, expressed her excitement about the prospect of the new sports complex. As a parent of five, she frequents Four Oaks Park, located a few miles away from the proposed site. Barrington believes having a new place where her kids can play sports and enjoy outdoor activities will be a welcome addition to the community.

The Charlie Ward Champions Ranch would cover 109.36 acres and include multi-sport fields, courts, a golf course, a driving range, walking trails, and park areas. Additionally, about 1/3 of the property would be designated for retail and event space. Pickleball player Spencer Duffey also shared his enthusiasm for the project, mentioning that having a new sports complex in the neighborhood would offer more options for recreational activities.

While the project has received initial approval from the planning commission, it still needs to navigate through additional steps before construction can begin. The next hurdle is for the city commission to vote on the rezoning of the area, with a decision expected at the August 21st meeting.
