Preventing Prostate Cancer: 5 Lifestyle Changes to Make

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can significantly reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men, with one in every eight men diagnosed during their lifetime. One in every 44 people is at risk of dying from this disease. Dr. Declan Cahill, a consultant urologist at London Bridge Hospital, offers advice on reducing the risk of prostate cancer through lifestyle changes.

Dr. Cahill emphasizes the importance of daily exercise in reducing the risk of prostate cancer. Cardiovascular exercise and strength training can help maintain muscle mass, support the skeletal system, burn calories, and improve overall quality of life. Regular physical activity also strengthens the immune system, helping the body identify and deal with potential cancer cells.

In terms of diet, Dr. Cahill recommends cutting out fatty foods and maintaining a healthy weight. Research shows that a gene involved in prostate cancer progression can be stimulated by fatty foods and red meat. Prioritizing unsaturated fats, fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains can help prevent health issues, including prostate cancer. Being overweight or obese increases the risk of advanced prostate cancer, so weight control is essential.

Limiting alcohol intake can also reduce the risk of certain cancers, including prostate cancer. Prostate Cancer UK recommends following NHS guidelines of no more than six drinks per week for overall health. Alcohol is high in calories, which can contribute to weight gain and increase the risk of cancer.

Dr. Cahill suggests incorporating foods known to be beneficial for prostate health, such as berries, green vegetables, and fish, into the diet. These foods contain antioxidants, trace minerals, and vitamins that promote prostate health. While specific benefits may be limited, focusing on a healthy, balanced diet is crucial for overall well-being.
