For the first time, Prince Heinrich XIII Reuss, one of the alleged ringleaders of an allegedly planned coup attempt in Germany, appeared in court. The defendant was visibly emotional during the proceedings. The trial took place before the State Security Senate of the Frankfurt Higher Regional Court, where Prince Reuss was allowed to greet his disabled daughter who was in the audience through a thick wall of safety glass.

In Frankfurt, the trial focuses on Prince Reuss and nine other defendants accused by the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office of membership or support of a terrorist organization. The group allegedly planned a coup in Germany, although they were willing to take the risk of death. Meanwhile, another trial in Stuttgart and Munich is targeting the alleged “military arm” of the group and other accomplices.

Prince Reuss, who is considered one of the main defendants, spoke for the first time after more than a month into the trial. He focused on sharing details about his career and personal life, rather than addressing the accusations against him. Throughout his statement, he appeared emotional, often having to collect himself. Prince Reuss highlighted his rejection of violence and shared personal anecdotes from his life, including his family’s experience during World War II.

While discussing his past, Prince Reuss emphasized his opposition to war and violence. He reflected on his upbringing, education, and personal challenges he faced, such as health issues and family disputes. However, there was little mention of recent events in his life. At the end of his statement, he mentioned his decision to move back to Thuringia before his arrest. Prince Reuss apologized for his emotional state throughout the proceedings and expressed uncertainty about his condition.

The day concluded with Prince Reuss being allowed to say goodbye to his daughter again through the glass wall. The defendant will face further questioning from the court in the next session. Despite the emotional nature of the trial, Prince Reuss remained consistent in his denial of any affinity with National Socialism and expressed his desire to show that he opposes violence.
