Prisma Health has recently made a significant investment of $41 million to introduce new smart beds throughout its health care system. These Hillrom smart beds and surfaces will replace approximately 1,500 inpatient beds in order to enhance the overall patient experience. Additionally, Prisma’s staff will have access to these smart beds to provide superior care to patients in various departments such as the intensive care unit, labor and delivery, medical and surgical units, and bariatrics.
The smart beds will come equipped with Hercules patient repositioning technology, allowing one caregiver to safely reposition a patient. These beds will also feature advanced technology to assist with fall prevention, pressure injury reduction, increased comfort, and improved communication. Additional innovative features include floor projections for bed alarm status, position, and side rails, powered transport with stop-and-turn controls, a fifth wheel for portability, a built-in USB port for patient devices, storage area, illuminated side rails, and under-bed lights.
Mark O’Halla, president and CEO of Prisma Health, emphasized that this investment reflects the organization’s commitment to prioritizing patient safety and satisfaction. He noted that implementing cutting-edge technology in these beds will streamline clinical workflows, reduce manual tasks, and minimize the risk of injury to both caregivers and patients. This, in turn, will enable health care professionals to deliver more efficient, accurate, and compassionate care to improve patient outcomes.
Prisma Health is currently in the process of implementing these new smart beds throughout its health care system, with the project expected to be completed by mid-September.
