Craig Anderson is the Wallace Benjamin Flint and L. May Hawver Professor of Chemistry and director of undergraduate research within the Division of Science, Mathematics, and Computing at Bard College. He has recently been awarded a Research in Undergraduate Institutions (RUI) grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF), totaling $375,699 in funding. This grant will focus on the effects of ligand architecture and metal oxidation state on luminescent platinum compounds. This grant marks Anderson’s fourth NSF RUI since 2011, with a total of over $1,000,000 awarded for research with undergraduate students at Bard College.

Anderson expressed his excitement about the grant, emphasizing the opportunities it will provide for undergraduate students to engage in research projects. He believes that undergraduate research is a valuable practice that contributes to the success of students. He expressed gratitude to his students, chemistry colleagues, Bard Office of Institutional Support (OIS), and Bard College leadership for their assistance in securing this grant.

RUI grants from NSF support faculty at Primarily Undergraduate Institutions in engaging in research within their respective fields, enhancing research capacity at their home institutions, and promoting the integration of research and undergraduate education. Established in 1950 by Congress, the NSF is an independent federal agency that aims to advance science and engineering, improve the nation’s health and welfare, and strengthen national defense. Approximately 25% of federal support for research conducted at US colleges and universities comes from NSF investments.

NSF’s mission is to keep the United States at the forefront of discovery in science and engineering, ensuring that the benefits of these advancements are accessible to all and advocating for inclusive participation in these fields.
