Salt Lake City is considering a plan to create a sports and entertainment district that would give the Delta Center a refreshed entrance. The ownership group of the Utah Jazz and the newly acquired NHL franchise in the state envisions a grand entrance for the Delta Center, along with a residential tower and a new hotel as part of the proposal.

During a presentation to the Salt Lake City Council, Smith Entertainment Group (SEG) executive Mike Maughan shared the vision for the district. The plan includes a new arena entrance opening up to a plaza, with renovations to the Delta Center expected to start in April of next year. Maughan emphasized the importance of creating gathering spaces for the community and ensuring benefits for residents, even if they don’t purchase tickets to the events held in the district.

SEG has committed to contributing over $3 billion of its own money to the district, which is proposed to be built on two blocks east of the Delta Center. The funding for the project would come from a half-a-percentage-point sales tax increase in Salt Lake City.

The proposed sports and entertainment district aims to revitalize downtown Salt Lake City and provide a dynamic space for residents and visitors alike. With the plans for a renovated entrance to the Delta Center, a new plaza, residential tower, and hotel, the district could transform the area into a vibrant hub of entertainment and community gatherings.
