Push for Gaza agreement by USA and G7

The United States is seeking the approval of the UN Security Council for a peace plan aimed at ending the conflict in Gaza. The G7 group has voiced its support for the plan, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s reaction has raised doubts about the agreement.

On Monday, the US introduced a resolution at the UN Security Council in support of President Joe Biden’s peace plan. The G7 group, which includes major world powers, has publicly backed the plan that Israel is reported to have agreed to. However, Netanyahu’s statement on Monday cast uncertainty on whether an agreement would be reached.

Netanyahu stated that Israel had not agreed to a ceasefire without meeting its conditions, contradicting Biden’s announcement. He insisted that Israel’s stance on the war remained unchanged: the destruction of Hamas and the release of all hostages. This comes after reports that four hostages held by Hamas had been killed while in captivity.

Despite the ongoing mediation efforts by the US, Qatar, and Egypt, disagreements persist between Israel and Hamas. Biden’s proposal outlined a phased approach to a ceasefire and hostage exchange, but Netanyahu’s coalition partners have threatened to withdraw support if the deal is accepted.

The White House continues to push for an agreement, urging Hamas to accept the terms presented by Israel. Meanwhile, the conflict in Gaza rages on, with the Israeli army discovering more Hamas tunnels and weapons depots. A significant portion of Gaza’s buildings have been damaged or destroyed during the eight-month-long conflict.

The G7 has called on Hamas to accept the agreement with Israel and reaffirmed its commitment to a two-state solution. Biden has engaged with regional leaders, including Qatar’s Emir, to secure support for the peace plan. However, Hamas remains the final obstacle to a complete ceasefire and the liberation of Gaza’s people.

As the situation in Gaza intensifies, the international community continues to strive for a resolution to the conflict. Netanyahu’s objections to the proposed agreement have added further complexity to the peace process. The path to a lasting ceasefire and peace in the region remains uncertain amidst ongoing diplomatic efforts and military operations.
