Qatar and Egypt have recently conveyed to Hamas leaders the possibility of arrest, asset freezes, sanctions, and expulsion from their refuge in Doha if they do not agree to a ceasefire with Israel, according to sources familiar with the discussions. These threats were reportedly made at the behest of the Biden administration, which is seeking a resolution to the conflict amidst political unrest.
Despite the threats, Hamas leaders, including Ismail Haniyeh and Yahya Sinwar, have rejected the proposed ceasefire deal, stating that it does not meet the organization’s conditions for ending the war. The Wall Street Journal reported that Qatari emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani was instructed to use measures to ensure Hamas accepts the deal, but officials have yet to receive a final response from the group.
National Security Council spokesman John Kirby stated that while there have been public statements from Hamas, they are awaiting an official and decisive response from the organization. The efforts to broker a ceasefire continue amidst tensions and disagreements between the parties involved.
