Rare amoeba causes young man to contract encephalitis

The young man was admitted to Sharon Hospital on Tuesday with symptoms of fever, headache, and vomiting. Despite being fully conscious at first, his condition deteriorated rapidly, and neurological symptoms appeared. After a series of tests, he was diagnosed with a rare disease and transferred to Levinson Hospital for intensive care in the neurosurgery department.

Dr. Aina Dvir, a senior physician in the neurosurgical intensive care unit at Bilinson, explained that the disease is so rare that it is often not considered as a possibility. Thanks to a quick diagnosis by Dr. Tamar Gutesman, treatment was administered promptly using various medications. The Ministry of Health reported that this disease has a high mortality rate and has only been reported in 400 cases worldwide so far.

The amoeba responsible for the disease thrives in warm water above 35 degrees Celsius and enters the body through the nose, typically when swimming or diving in warm water sources like lakes, rivers, and springs. An investigation by the Ministry of Health found that the young man was likely infected at Guy beach, prompting an inspection of the water sources in the area. The Ministry will inform the public if necessary.
