Recall of Numerous Spinach Products Due to Positive Listeria Test

Federal health officials have issued a recall for more than 40 fresh spinach products after testing revealed the presence of listeria. Solata Foods LLC of Newburgh, New York, is recalling its “Fresh Spinach” over concerns that it may be contaminated with the organism. Listeria can sometimes lead to serious and fatal infections, according to the notice posted by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Testing from the New York State Department of Agriculture and Market Food Inspectors found the organism in a 9-ounce package of Bogopa fresh spinach, prompting the company to halt production of that product.

All of the fresh spinach products were distributed to local retailers and come in different sizes. So far, no illnesses have been reported in connection to the recall, but consumers who have purchased the product should return it for a refund, according to the company. When consuming food contaminated with listeria, people can develop listeriosis, with symptoms ranging from mild to severe. Mild symptoms include fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In more severe cases, symptoms can include a headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions.

Listeriosis can be fatal in young children, elderly individuals, and those with a compromised immune system. Pregnant women can suffer miscarriages and stillbirths as a result of the infection. It is important for consumers to take note of the recall and return any affected products for a refund to prevent any potential health risks associated with listeria contamination.
