Recurrent Tonsillitis: A Common Summer Illness

Hot weather can create favorable conditions for bacteria to grow, leading to an increased risk of tonsillitis in children who frequently stay in cold, air-conditioned rooms. Dr. Tran Thi Thuy Hang, Head of the Department of Ear, Nose and Throat at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, explained that tonsils play a crucial role in protecting the respiratory system from harmful agents like bacteria and viruses. However, the tonsils are often the first line of defense and can easily weaken and become inflamed when exposed to pathogens.

The hospital has seen a significant increase in the number of children with recurrent tonsillitis, with many requiring surgery due to the heat and erratic weather providing ideal conditions for bacteria and viruses to thrive. Children spending time in air-conditioned rooms can also dry out their nasal and throat mucosa, making them more susceptible to infections.

Dr. Hang emphasized the importance of timely treatment for tonsillitis, especially in cases of severe inflammation or recurrent infections. Surgery may be necessary to remove the tonsils and adenoids, with the summer months providing a convenient time for families to schedule these procedures and ensure proper post-operative care.

Using advanced technology like Coblator plasma technology, tonsillectomies and adenoid curettage can be performed with less pain, bleeding, and a lower risk of recurrence. Patients are typically able to eat and drink shortly after surgery and can be discharged within 24 hours.

It is essential for patients to follow post-operative instructions, including consuming liquid, cold, and soft foods, avoiding spicy or hard foods, maintaining oral hygiene, and wearing a mask when going out. Regular follow-up appointments are crucial to monitor the healing process and prevent any complications.

Parents can help prevent tonsillitis in children by cleaning their teeth daily, ensuring they wear masks when going out, maintaining a clean environment, and avoiding dusty areas. Surgery should be considered in cases of frequent tonsillitis or obstruction of the upper respiratory tract, as it can effectively treat inflammation and prevent future complications.
