Red Cross in Need of Health and Mental Health Professionals as Volunteers

The American Red Cross is looking for licensed health and mental health professionals in Monroe County to volunteer their services. Currently, there is only one mental health professional serving the county, with no health care providers volunteering locally. Nurses, emergency medical technicians, physicians, and other licensed professionals are needed for on-call shifts to assist with disasters in southeast Michigan, such as home fires and floods.

In Monroe County, the Red Cross is specifically seeking four to six current or retired state of Michigan licensed health professionals to provide on-call virtual services. Volunteers would commit to one week every month to assist residents who have experienced a disaster. These volunteers provide physical and emotional support to individuals during their darkest moments, helping them replace prescription medications, eyeglasses, walkers, wheelchairs, and offering emotional support in the aftermath of a disaster.

Trisha Horvath, volunteer regional and associate divisional nurse lead for the Red Cross, emphasized the importance of health and mental health care volunteers in providing support to people in times of crisis. Volunteers with the Red Cross may be eligible to receive continuing education credits for completing training and actively engaging in their volunteer commitment.
