Red Sox ownership, including John Henry, Tom Werner, and the late Larry Lucchino, has been announced as the honorees for the 10th annual Sports Humanitarian Awards at this year’s ESPYs. They will receive this year’s Sports Philanthropist of the Year award for their work in the community. Despite facing criticism from Boston fans for not investing in the Red Sox, the ownership group has invested $120 million in community projects across New England and Lee County, Florida since acquiring the team in 2002.

John Henry and his wife, Linda Pizzutti, are recognized for creating the Fenway Park Learning Lab and providing educational tours to Boston Public School students. Tom Werner is credited with the Home Base program, which supports veterans’ mental health. The late Larry Lucchino had a significant impact on cancer treatment and research fundraising through his work with Dana-Farber and The Jimmy Fund.

Together, Henry, Werner, and Lucchino have helped raise over $167 million for cancer research initiatives. They will receive their award at the 2024 ESPYs, which will be held in Los Angeles on July 11. Matt Geagan is a sports producer for CBS Boston who has been covering Boston sports for nearly 20 years.
