The San Antonio Report is delighted to feature the weekly bigcitysmalltown podcast hosted by Robert Rivard, co-founder of the Report. Each Tuesday, we will provide a brief summary of the podcast.

In 2005, George Hernández took on the role of leading University Health with a clear vision in mind. He aimed to make the hospital a top-tier academic medical center in South Texas. Hernández shared his journey with Rivard in the latest episode of the BigCitySmallTown podcast, reflecting on the growth and challenges faced during his leadership.

As University Health looks towards future growth, Hernández prepares for retirement. Edward Banos took over as CEO on July 1. Hernández discussed the successful expansions of University Health, such as the Sky Tower and Women’s and Children’s Hospital, as well as the impact of the COVID pandemic on the hospital system.

Hernández emphasized the importance of moving closer to San Antonio’s communities to provide healthcare services where people live. He expressed his excitement for retirement and spending time with his grandchildren, acknowledging that generational change is a positive factor for continued growth. Hernández humorously mentioned that everyone has an expiration date and that fresh perspectives are essential for the organization’s success.
