In his quest to uncover the earliest DNA in the United States, Danish scientist Eske Willerslev is faced with profound ethical and personal dilemmas. The DNA of ancient human remains found in the United States has the potential to shed light on long-standing debates in North American history. Over the course of more than a decade, Willerslev has traveled extensively across the US to study DNA data and its implications for our understanding of early humans.

Through his research, Willerslev has come into contact with Indigenous tribes who are advocating for the reburial of their ancestors’ remains. These encounters have challenged Willerslev to reexamine his own beliefs and biases in interpreting the often ambiguous data he uncovers. As a scientist, Willerslev’s objective ideals are put to the test as he grapples with the ethical implications of his work and the personal connections he forms along the way.

“Remains,” a documentary film by Linus Mork, chronicles Willerslev’s journey as he navigates the complexities of studying DNA from ancient human remains in the United States. His experiences serve as a unique lens through which to explore the intersection of science, ethics, and personal identity in the field of genetic research.
