Lenovo is making headlines once again for its innovative approach to PC design, this time with the world’s first transparent laptop. Set to be showcased at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024, the upcoming notebook from Lenovo features a design that resembles a slab of glass attached to a glass keyboard, potentially setting a new trend in personal computing devices.
The transparent display panels being used in the laptop are likely to be from either LG or Samsung, both of which were previously showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024. According to reports from Windowsreport, these panels will be used in Lenovo’s upcoming innovation.
Promotional images of the transparent laptop belonging to the ThinkBook lineup have been leaked, revealing a bezel-less design that makes it resemble a slab of glass. Although not fully transparent, the laptop is translucent, allowing light to pass through. Additionally, the laptop appears to feature a digital keyboard, possibly with capacitive buttons that provide the feel of pressing physical keys, powered by a motor, similar to a trackpad on a modern MacBook.
The specifications of the machine have not yet been disclosed, but it is likely to run on Windows 11 and be based on Intel’s latest Ultra Core series of processors. This would make it the first AI-ready PC with a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU).
It is unclear whether Lenovo plans to sell this transparent laptop or if it is purely a concept, similar to the Moto Rizr, a phone with a rollable display showcased at last year’s MWC. While transparent display technology is not new, incorporating it into devices has been challenging due to cost. However, breakthroughs from big display tech brands may lead to transparent display panels being used in more form factors in the future. LG has announced that its signature OLED T transparent TV will be available for sale later this year.
Lenovo has a history of producing groundbreaking computing devices, such as the world’s first foldable laptop, the ThinkPad X1 Fold, and the Lenovo Yoga Book 9i, a laptop with two displays. These innovations demonstrate the company’s strong research and development capabilities.
