Report: Multiple NFL Owners Lodge Complaints with League Office About 49ers Ahead of Super Bowl 2024

Feb 12, 2024

The San Francisco 49ers have been benefiting from the new NFL rule approved by 32 owners that rewards teams with compensatory picks whenever a minority member of their organization is hired away to be a head coach or general manager for another team. The purpose of the rule was to encourage diversity and reward teams that hired and developed minority coaches and executives. The 49ers have been the biggest beneficiaries of this policy, receiving three special compensatory picks in the 2023 draft alone, which all came at the end of the third round.

Under the rule, when a team loses a minority coach or executive to a head coach or general manager job, they are compensated with two third-round picks, awarded as one pick in two consecutive years. If a team loses two employees during a single offseason, they will receive three third-round picks spread out over three consecutive years. Over the past three seasons, the 49ers have gained extra picks due to the losses of Robert Saleh, Martin Mayhew, Mike McDaniel, DeMeco Ryans, and Ran Carthon, with these losses netting the 49ers several extra third-round picks that they will receive through 2025.

With these extra picks, the 49ers have made the most of them, using them to pick up players such as Ambry Thomas and Jake Moody, both of whom have played significant roles for the team. Despite the 49ers benefiting from the new policy, other owners have expressed dissatisfaction with it, even though they had approved the rule and are also eligible to benefit from it.
