Report: Vikings moving to re-sign former Super Bowl champion pending physical examination

The Minnesota Vikings are expected to re-sign running back Cam Akers almost a year after acquiring him in a trade. The signing is contingent on Akers passing a physical, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Akers, who is 25 years old, has been without a team since his contract expired in March. He originally came to the Vikings from the Los Angeles Rams in a trade last September. Akers appeared in six games for the Vikings as a backup to Alexander Mattison before suffering a season-ending Achilles tear in November. Despite this injury, Akers is known for his quick recovery from a previous Achilles tear, returning just five months after the injury to help the Rams win a Super Bowl title.

If Akers re-signs with the Vikings for a second season, he will once again be working with head coach Kevin O’Connell, who was previously the offensive coordinator for the Rams. It is uncertain where Akers will fall in the running back depth chart, as the team also has Aaron Jones and Ty Chandler as options in the backfield. In his limited playing time for Minnesota last season, Akers recorded just over 200 scrimmage yards and caught 11 passes as a third-down option.
