Representative Chip Brown passes legislation improving mental health support for veterans.

The Alabama House passed a measure on Wednesday that will ensure that military veterans across the state receive the mental health services they need. State Rep. Chip Brown emphasized the importance of providing quality mental health care to veterans who have served the country. He stated that it is crucial to acknowledge the sacrifices and needs of those who have worn a uniform defending the nation.

Senate Bill 135, introduced by Sen. Andrew Jones, allows the Alabama Department of Mental Health and the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs to collaborate on creating a comprehensive plan for mental health care, treatment, and recovery for veterans in Alabama. The plan will address a range of mental health issues, including substance abuse recovery, traumatic brain injuries, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

The Veterans Mental Health Steering Committee, which includes state agency heads, public officials, and other stakeholders, will develop the plan. Eligible individuals for assistance under the plan include Alabama residents who served in the U.S. military forces and were honorably discharged, as well as veterans of the Alabama National Guard, Alabama Air National Guard, and reserve forces.

The comprehensive plan must be submitted to the Alabama Legislature for review and input by April 1, 2025, and to the governor for approval by June 30, 2025. The governor is required to begin implementing the plan no later than August 31, 2025. This initiative aims to ensure that veterans in Alabama receive the mental health services they need and deserve.
