Rescuers are currently searching the Patapsco River in Baltimore after a major bridge collapsed into the water. The collapse occurred after a container ship crashed into the bridge, causing it to snap and fall into the river around 01:30 ET (05:30 GMT). Vehicles and people were also involved in the collapse, with at least seven people currently missing and two individuals already rescued from the water.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge, which is 3km (1.6 miles) long and part of a major highway, is now blocked by the ship that caused the collapse. Authorities have described the incident as “an unspeakable tragedy” as some construction workers were on the bridge during the collapse. Sonar has indicated that multiple vehicles are underwater in the river, which has a temperature of around 8C (47F).

Officials have stated that there is no evidence to suggest the crash was intentional, but it is still too early to determine what caused the collapse. The port of Baltimore, near the bridge, is the largest in the US for specialised cargo. A search operation is currently underway to locate and rescue the missing individuals, while the cause of the collapse is still under investigation.
