In Burgrieden, Baden-Württemberg, heavy rain and flooding have led to the deaths of many stork chicks in southern Germany. However, in one nest, the parents are now overjoyed. A craftsman and his wife have saved their babies, creating a heartwarming stork story with a happy outcome.
Three years ago, Erwin F. erected a mast with a stork’s nest behind their house, costing 1,000 euros. A pair of storks quickly made it their home. This year, despite the cold and rain, two stork chicks survived in the nest, with hopes for good weather dashed as the flood disaster began on 1 June.
Observing the nest from his terrace daily, Erwin F. realized the chicks wouldn’t survive the storm. With the help of a colleague and a forklift, they managed to bring the chicks to safety, contacting a stork rescue center expert for guidance along the way.
It was crucial to leave the dead sibling in the nest to ensure the parent birds wouldn’t abandon their young. After drying the chicks and feeding them herrings, the storks were lovingly cared for in a wheelbarrow under a red light lamp in the former children’s room.
Despite potential legal consequences for intervening without permission, the couple prioritized saving the stork chicks from the cold. After four days of care, the chicks were returned to the nest and are now being fed by their parents as if nothing had ever happened. The heartwarming rescue story highlights the compassion and dedication of the couple in the face of adversity.
