Rescuers are currently searching the Patapsco River in Baltimore after a major bridge collapsed into the water. The bridge collapsed after being hit by a container ship, causing vehicles and people to plunge into the river. Aerial shots show the ship wedged into debris from the Francis Scott Key Bridge, a 3km long bridge that is part of a major highway in the city.

Authorities are reporting that at least seven people are missing and rescuers are working to locate them. Two individuals have already been pulled from the water. Officials have used sonar to detect multiple vehicles submerged underwater near the collapsed bridge.

The fire department reported that the ship collided with a column of the bridge around 01:30 ET (05:30 GMT) and there is no indication that it was intentional. The port of Baltimore, located near the bridge, is the largest in the US for specialised cargo. Rescuers are actively working to locate and assist those impacted by the collapse.
