Residents in New York State urged to get tested for HIV by Department of Health

Today is National HIV Testing Day and the NYS Health Department is urging residents to be aware of their HIV status. To mark the occasion, the DOH has launched a campaign to give away free HIV self-test kits. Advertisements for the campaign can be seen on social media and online platforms, with a focus on reaching Latinas, LGBTQ+ individuals, and Black women.

There has been an increase in new HIV cases among young gay Latinos, leading to a call for targeted funding to address this issue. Those who are eligible will receive a discount code for a free self-test kit, while everyone else will be directed to the AIDs Institute website for additional information and resources.

Dr. James McDonald, the State Health Commissioner, emphasizes the importance of self-testing as a tool for individuals to take charge of their sexual health, protect others, and reduce HIV transmission. Dr. McDonald highlights that knowing how to prevent and control the spread of HIV is crucial for open communication with sexual partners and healthcare providers, as well as taking control of one’s sexual health.
