Riverview Health is enhancing the skills of their employees to meet the demand for critical healthcare positions

Riverview Health and Ivy Tech in Hamilton County have partnered to address the shortage of healthcare workers by helping the hospital workforce learn new skills. One story of success comes from Katy Learned, a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant at Riverview Health. Starting her career as a receptionist, Katy always knew she wanted to be involved in patient care, and the pandemic further fueled her passion for the field. When the opportunity arose to work and earn her medical assistance license, she seized it, balancing work and school to achieve her goal.

With the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projecting a 14 percent growth in employment of medical assistants by 2032, Riverview and Ivy Tech recognized the existing shortage of workers for this position. As such, they developed a program to meet this critical need, emphasizing the importance of partnerships in addressing job shortages both locally and nationwide. The collaboration between Ivy Tech and Riverview has been instrumental in supporting students and upskilling the workforce.

Looking ahead, Riverview Health plans to expand the program in partnership with Ivy Tech to continue meeting the demand for skilled healthcare workers. The hospital emphasizes the value of private employers investing in their workforce’s education and development to fill critical job openings. Dave Hyatt, the CEO of Riverview Health, speaks highly of Ivy Tech as a partner in crafting solutions tailored to the organization’s needs. Private employers working with educational institutions like Ivy Tech are essential in creating opportunities for employees to grow and excel in their careers.
