Endiatx has developed a new piece of technology called PillBots that are entering clinical trials with the goal of undergoing FDA review. If successful, these tiny robots could potentially be launched commercially as early as 2026. The PillBots are swallowable robots equipped with cameras and sensors that can perform non-invasive endoscopies, eliminating the need for traditional upper endoscopies (EGD).
These robots provide doctors with a quick look inside the stomach during a telemedicine call, making it easier to navigate internal affairs without sedation or extensive fasting from the patient. After being ingested, the PillBot moves around the body using patented multi-pumpjet propulsion controlled remotely by doctors. The live feed from inside the body, illuminated by the robot’s LED system, is saved for later AI-enhanced analysis.
Endiatx CEO Torrey Smith has demonstrated the process multiple times by swallowing the PillBot himself. The robot shuts off and passes through the gastrointestinal system within 24 hours of ingestion. The company has raised $7 million in funding and is working on improving the video quality that can be transmitted by the PillBot.
PillBots are expected to be affordable, with potential over-the-counter purchases priced at around $50 per unit. Endiatx is also considering expanding their product line with PillSurgeon, a version of the PillBot equipped with tools for tasks such as removing polyps, collecting microbiome samples, cauterizing bleeds, and performing biopsies.
