Rochester scouts locations for new regional sports complex

Rochester is in the process of developing a new regional sports complex, with potential sites on both the north and south sides of the city under consideration. The Rochester City Council recently reviewed potential land purchases in a closed session, aiming to identify 75-100 acres for the project.

While specific details on the potential purchases are limited, public parcel numbers indicate three sites of interest. These include a plot of bare land owned by Seneca Foods Corporation, a parcel owned by Rochester West Campus LLC that would use part of the former IBM Campus, and bare land in Kalmar Township owned by two property owners.

Rochester’s Recreation Supervisor, Ben Boldt, believes that the new sports complex will be a valuable asset to the community, providing space for various sports activities and events. He emphasized the importance of creating a facility that is accessible to both residents and visitors participating in tournaments and events.

While a timeline for the land purchase is not yet confirmed, the city aims to break ground on the project in 2025. Once a site is secured, design and construction plans will be finalized for the complex. The facility is expected to provide space for sports like pickleball, football, and soccer, catering to a wide range of athletes and enthusiasts.
