KPRC 2 and American Furniture Warehouse collaborated to surprise 20 high school seniors who are eligible for scholarships in 2023. These students were nominated by their respective high schools. This year’s recipient of the 18th $2,500 scholarship award is Nathalie Yanes, a senior athlete and photographer at Ross Shaw Sterling Aviation Early College High School in the Houston Independent School District.
Yanes used her photography skills to pursue her passion for sports, as she was an athlete herself in soccer and track and field. Her skills as a sports photographer also allowed her to participate in a highly competitive sports photography internship at the National Football League. Aside from her extracurricular activities, Yanes is a HISD Ignite Scholar.
Despite facing setbacks in her personal life, such as the loss of her best friend and classmate Warren White and her childhood friend Brianna Rodriguez in the Astroworld tragedy, Yanes has managed to maintain her grades and pursue her goals. She dedicates herself to “strengthening the organization” in her role as a Student Council member, Future Doctors Academy participant, and Student Ambassador.
Yanes plans to study criminal justice and psychology at Texas State University to become a forensic psychologist and help children in the future.
