Russia can win in Ukraine without nuclear weapons, says Mr. Putin

During a plenary session at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) on June 7, Russian President Vladimir Putin made statements affirming that Russia does not need nuclear weapons to achieve victory, emphasizing the character of the Russian people. He stated that nuclear weapons are only used in special cases outlined in the nuclear doctrine, such as in response to a threat to national sovereignty and territorial integrity, which he believes has not occurred yet. This signals that Russia will not launch a nuclear attack against Ukraine.

President Putin mentioned that the nuclear doctrine is not set in stone and can be adjusted as needed based on the world situation. He also mentioned the possibility of conducting a nuclear test, although he stated that this was not necessary with modern computer systems capable of simulating all information. The Russian leader announced that Russian forces have gained control of additional territory in the Donbass region, emphasizing Russia’s determination to win the conflict in Ukraine and bring about a peace agreement.

Despite recent warnings of a global war from the Kremlin, Western and Ukrainian leaders have downplayed the risk of nuclear war with Russia. The Russian nuclear doctrine outlines situations in which the Russian president may consider using nuclear weapons, including in response to an attack with nuclear weapons, weapons of mass destruction, or conventional weapons that threaten the survival of the Russian state. President Putin rejected claims of Russia “brandishing a nuclear sword”, pointing out the historical use of nuclear weapons by the US.
