Russian Foreign Ministry meets with Hamas representative to discuss “joint infrastructure projects”

A meeting between Musa Abu Marzouk, the deputy head of the Politburo of Hamas, and Mikhail Bogdanov, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, took place in Moscow on the evening of June 24. The meeting, as reported by the Hamas Palestinian Information Center (PIC), involved discussions on the situation in the Gaza Strip, Israeli plans for annexation, and violations by Israel. Abu Marzouk emphasized Hamas’s position in support of a ceasefire and the rights of Palestinian prisoners. The parties also discussed political developments, efforts for unity in Palestine, and thanked Russia for its regional stability efforts.

Russia reiterated its support for the Palestinian people during the meeting, emphasizing the need to end the conflict in Gaza. Discussions on bilateral and international issues also took place, with a focus on infrastructure projects in transportation and energy sectors. The meeting also addressed the ongoing captivity of Russian citizens, expressing a desire for their release from Gaza.

Despite Russia’s interactions with Hamas, the release of Russian hostages remains unresolved. Former meetings between Russian officials and Hamas leadership have occurred without progress on hostage release. Although Russia does not label Hamas as a terrorist organization, it continues to advocate for the humanitarian needs of prisoners and highlighted the importance of ceasefire efforts.

The meeting with Abu Marzouk is part of ongoing contacts between Russia and Hamas, aimed at addressing key issues and promoting regional stability. Despite challenges in securing the release of Russian citizens held captive by Hamas, Russia remains engaged in diplomatic efforts in the region.
