Matthew Salvini is moving closer to the ‘Patriots’ group founded by Viktor Orban, following the path set by the Hungarian Prime Minister along with the Austrian FPO and the Czech ANO party. Salvini aims to establish a large alternative group to the left in Europe, beginning with an alliance open to those who have been excluded from current agreements between the EPP, Socialists, and Liberals.

The envisioned outcome is the formation of a broader Eurogroup of Identity and Democracy, where the League currently collaborates with the French Rassemblement National. The ‘Patriots for Europe’ now include the FPO and the newly added Chega party from Portugal. Salvini is also betting on Orban’s project while awaiting a decision from the Brothers of Italy party.

Reactions from FdI are mixed, as they are also in talks with their PiS allies from Poland. PiS is considering joining the ‘Patriots’ group, which would impact the composition of Meloni’s coalition significantly. Forza Italia, on the other hand, remains aligned with the EPP and is supportive of collaboration with Meloni’s party in the European Parliament for the new commission.

Negotiations are ongoing, and the outcome will determine FdI’s support in the European Parliament. Meloni is keeping all options open, seeking a prominent role for Italy in the new commission, possibly securing an economic portfolio and a vice presidency for Italian candidate Raffaele Fitto. Ultimately, FdI’s decision will be based on the progress of negotiations and the benefits for Italy within the new executive structure.
