Samsung workers in South Korea initiate their first strike

The first strike at Samsung Electronics in South Korea is currently taking place as the company and the union have been in negotiations for the renewal of the contract and an increase in wages. Samsung Electronics is a major smartphone manufacturer and produces high-end AI hardware and memory chips used globally. Despite being the world’s largest memory chip maker, management has been unable to reach an agreement with the union over wages since January.

Son Woo-mok, head of the National Samsung Electronics Union, stated that the strike is using paid holidays and is expected to have significant participation from employees. While the exact number of participants is unknown, there has been a noticeable decrease in workplace attendance compared to normal days. The strike is scheduled to be only one day and coincides with a planned holiday period, so the company should have already adjusted its staffing levels accordingly.
