San Antonio International Airport expansion prompts demand from passengers and business groups for additional nonstop flights

Sep 17, 2023

Roger and Rosemary Thompson frequently travel from San Antonio International Airport but struggle with the lack of direct flights available. They often have to endure half-day trips ordeals, sometimes lasting almost a full day. Unfortunately, this is a common issue for many residents of San Antonio, as the airport currently only offers around 40 nonstop flights, with plans for nonstop flights to Philadelphia in the future.

To address this issue, a new terminal construction is scheduled for 2024, a development that has garnered excitement from business groups like the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce. Dave Peterson, the Interim President and CEO of the Chamber, expressed enthusiasm, stating that increased nonstop flight options would contribute to greater economic activity in the region. The City Council has also approved a $3.7 billion spending plan for fiscal year 2024, part of which will be allocated towards improving the airport system and financing the new terminal.

Jesús Saenz, the airport director, is committed to expanding the number of flights to the airport, recognizing the growing demand from the community. Furthermore, plans for a third terminal are in motion. This additional facility will accommodate 17 more gates and cater to a larger number of passengers. Set to be located alongside Terminal B, this new terminal is expected to be operational by 2028.

Overall, the efforts to enhance San Antonio International Airport aim to provide residents with more convenient and efficient travel options, addressing the current lack of direct flights and meeting the increasing demand for air travel in the region.
