San Francisco business owner reaches breaking point after store is ransacked for the fourth time

A San Francisco business in the Richmond District is contemplating shutting down after being broken into and ransacked for the fourth time. Cigarettes Cheaper, a family-owned establishment that has been around since 2003, has been the victim of multiple thefts according to Bashir, the store’s owner.

Bashir expressed frustration at the continuous break-ins, stating that they have been happening since 2020. Police observed possible suspects entering cars and fleeing the scene, even hitting a marked police vehicle in the process. While one car was found abandoned on the 300 block of 17th Ave, a firearm and potentially stolen items were also discovered, though no arrests were made.

The constant thefts have taken a toll on the store’s finances as Bashir mentioned the rising costs of rent, employee wages, and now the need to repair damages. The store has already invested in interior fencing to deter break-ins, but thieves recently rammed through it with a car, causing extensive damage. The estimated costs of stolen items and repairs are in the tens of thousands, with no insurance coverage available due to the high crime rate in the area.

With no insurance to cover the losses and the financial strain continuing to grow, Bashir is contemplating closing the shop permanently. The ongoing thefts have made it difficult for the business to turn a profit, and the owner is frustrated with the lack of support from insurance companies and law enforcement.
