Sanctions issued following brawl in Chamber of Deputies

The Bureau of the Chamber is in dispute between the majority and the opposition regarding the extent of sanctions to be imposed on deputies involved in a brawl during the examination of the bill on Autonomy. A meeting lasting from 1pm to 7pm resulted in the vote outcomes. The majority deputies involved in the brawl justified themselves to Roberto Calderoli by explaining they were trying to protect a Northern League minister and did not carry out offensive acts towards the Five Star MP. Three deputies did not show up for the hearings. The majority proposed postponing the decision on sanctions to find unanimity.

The majority expressed a desire to close the episode and send a message of firmness. President of the Chamber Lorenzo Fontana was harsh in announcing the measures. The vote resulted in various sanctions imposed on the deputies involved. Some members of the Bureau expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of proportionality in defining the ban days for the deputies. Opposition members protested the decisions, stating they confused victims and attackers.
