Schlein’s Alliance Guidelines: No Vetoes and Focus on the Right

The Democratic Party is pushing back against the Italian and European right while continuing to focus on key themes. Secretary Elly Schlein welcomed the newly elected European parliamentarians at the national headquarters in Largo del Nazareno, setting the tone for the party’s direction in Italy and Europe. The meeting was described as positive and enthusiastic by attendees like Dario Nardella, Matteo Ricci, and Antonio Decaro. These local administrators recognized that the party’s growth was due to a combination of the secretary’s activism and their presence in the territories.

Schlein emphasized that the issues from the electoral campaign will remain central to the party’s agenda both inside and outside Parliament. Key issues include the health bill, minimum wage, and rights, particularly abortion and LGBTQ rights which were excluded from the G7 draft. The Democrats are rallying against attacks on Parliament and defending the Constitution. A demonstration is planned on June 18 in Rome, as part of the opposition’s push for a coalition that presents a solid alternative to the center-right government.

Antonio Decaro highlighted the need for progressive forces to unite, bridging gaps between parties, particularly in local elections like those in Bari. Schlein, drawing on her experience in Brussels, will lead European negotiations for high positions and group leaders, leveraging her knowledge of community institutions. The focus remains on building a strong alternative to the right without imposing any vetoes. The party sees itself as pivotal in this construction, emphasizing the need for unity and collaboration among progressive forces.
