Scientific Spotlight: Persistent Organic Pollutants

In this edition of Spot on Science, Jeff St. Clair educates readers about forever chemicals, which are man-made chemicals that do not easily break down in the environment. These chemicals, known as PFAS, can contaminate drinking water sources and accumulate in wildlife and humans globally, posing potential health risks.

PFAS are commonly found in products such as nonstick skillets, waterproof clothing, stain-resistant fabrics, fast food wrappers, and some types of dental floss. Certain makeup brands, especially long-lasting and waterproof varieties, also contain PFAS. Research has indicated that high levels of PFAS exposure can lead to health issues like liver, kidney, thyroid gland, and digestive system problems.

Therefore, it is important to be aware of the presence of PFAS in everyday products and take precautions to minimize exposure for the well-being of both individuals and the environment. Educating yourself on the sources of these forever chemicals and making informed choices can contribute to a healthier, safer future for all.
