A team of researchers recently discovered a new type of cat with a unique fur pattern that distinguishes it from the typical tuxedo breed. The cat, named salmiak after a Finnish licorice, has a fur pattern that starts with a solid color at the base, such as black, and gradually turns white towards the tip. This mutation has never been seen before in domestic cats.

The cat was first observed in Central Finland back in 2007, where people noticed these cats with distinct fur patterns and eye colors. Despite the rarity of this fur type, the researchers were surprised to find that the cats were not infertile and could give birth to adorable kittens.

The researchers conducted DNA tests on five of the cats and discovered a deletion in the KIT gene, which is responsible for determining fur color in felines. This deletion is the likely cause of the unique salmiak coat color in these cats. Similar genetic mutations have been linked to patterns in other animals like horses and mice.

While it’s unclear if this new cat breed will be recognized in pedigreed cat registries, the research has shed light on the genetic diversity present in domestic cats. The discovery has captured the hearts of cat lovers around the world and further showcases the beauty and complexity of these beloved pets.
