The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has named Sean Mooney as the new director of their Center for Information Technology (CIT), beginning in mid-March. NIH Director Monica Bertagnolli praised Mooney’s career in developing collaborative computing systems to support biomedical research, highlighting his background in bioinformatics and expertise in managing a research IT department as reasons for his appointment.

In his new role, Mooney will oversee a $400 million portfolio that includes the use of supercomputers for large-scale data analyses in medical research. The CIT works closely with the NIH intramural community in computational bioscience, engineering, informatics and statistics to support biomedical discoveries and provides IT infrastructure and services to all of NIH.

Mooney comes to the CIT from the University of Washington (UW) School of Medicine, where he teaches biomedical informatics and serves as the chief research information officer and interim director for the UW Institute for Medical Data Science. He is also the director of informatics for the UW Institute of Translational Health Sciences.

NIH Director Bertagnolli expressed her anticipation for Mooney’s arrival and thanked Ivor D’Souza for serving as the acting director of CIT following the retirement of former director Andrea Norris in September 2022.
