Nearly a month ago, a drive-by shooting occurred near Shawnee Sports Complex in Charleston, W.Va., causing visitors and players to flee upon hearing gunshots. Since the incident, there has been increased preparedness at the complex with the Kanawha County Commission working to update safety protocols. All staff members have participated in active shooter training multiple times, ensuring they are equipped to handle emergency situations.

Commissioner Salango stated that patrol has been increased at the park and surrounding areas in Dunbar and Institute. Additionally, exit gates are being installed that will automatically lock when closed, providing an additional layer of security at Shawnee. These new measures will remain in place for the foreseeable future to ensure the safety of all visitors to the complex.

Over the weekend, the Shawnee Sports Complex hosted the 2024 U.S. Youth Soccer Presidents Cup, attracting a large number of attendees. Team manager Beth Noss expressed gratitude for the presence of law enforcement officers on-site, especially during intense soccer matches when emotions can run high. Noss welcomed the new security measures at Shawnee, acknowledging the importance of ensuring a safe environment for all participants and spectators.
